As Malaysians, can we really say no to food, especially if it’s good? We all know our cuisine represents one of the best in the world, and often times, you don’t have to spend a bomb to enjoy it. Your neighbourhood mamaks and hawker centres easily serve delicious food that would satisfy even the most critical of food critics, which brings me to my next point: food around M Oscar.
M Oscar is located at the intersections of Kuchai Lama, Happy Garden and Sri Petaling, which puts it in a convenient spot when it comes to food.
Old is gold
First stop is Sek Me Choy, one of Malaysia’s very first restaurants to offer Black Pepper Bak Kut Teh. This restaurant has a history spanning more than 25 years and takes after the owner’s nickname, ‘Sekmechoy’, which translates into Tin Genius-a reflection of his love for tin mining. Mr Chan Kin Chai (owner) owned many tin mines in the Kuala Lumpur-Selangor area and was able to combine his passion for tin mining and food by exchanging food recipes with others in the trade. His most popular dishes include the Black Pepper Bak Kut Teh, which was voted as the Top 20 National Kings of Bak Kut Teh in 2006. They also sell Hakka Salt Roast Chicken, Hakka Pork with Pickled Vegetables, Hokkien Nanan Mustard Rice and more delicacies! Approximately 6km away from M Oscar, check them out at 199, Jalan Besar, Salak Selatan, 57100 Kuala Lumpur.

Seafood galore
If you’re into Fish Head Noodles, then this one is for you. Goon Wah Restaurant, located opposite the KFC drive-thru in Kuchai Lama, is famous for its specialty XO Fish Head Noodles. Served in a hot claypot circa ‘97, the milky-white, soup-based dish contains yam slices and fried fish head coupled with noodles that have been described to be ‘silky smooth’. Other recommended dishes include their Claypot Lou Shi Fun, which comes with bits of pork pieces, shrimp and their secret marinated minced meat. The queue here is said to be long and seats often filled (it’s popular for a reason!), so don’t miss out! You can eat to your heart’s desire (about 5km away from M Oscar) at G13, Jalan 3/115c, Taman Kuchai Jaya, 58200 Kuala Lumpur, Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur.

Bubble Tea
To celebrate the bubble tea craze, the next paragraph is dedicated to Jalan Radin Bagus, the new SS15 of Sri Petaling. Here, you’ll be able to find Xing Fu Tang, Daboba, Chatime, The Alley, The Black Whale, Tealive, Panntea, and even local flavours from Heesan Chatei! Born and raised in Malacca, Heesan Chatei serves an extensive tea selection not limited to just bubble tea- they’ve got fruit tea, cheese tea, milky pearls, pure tea and ice brews, worth checking out! Whichever brand you pledge your allegiance to, you’re bound to find your favourite drink on this street. Time to go cray cray!
