This World Sleep Day, find out how you can redesign your bedroom to get more restful sleep—and stand a chance to win some relaxing gifts from Mah Sing to help with that.

There’s nothing quite like returning to your home to relax and unwind after a long day out. But is your bedroom designed for optimum sleep? If you’ve been having trouble falling asleep, perhaps it’s time you consider redesigning your bedroom or incorporating some pre-sleep habits to get adequate rest.

Read on for some tips on redesigning your room to get a better night’s sleep and stand a chance to win some delightful gifts from Mah Sing in conjunction with World Sleep Day:

1. Use dim and warm lighting in the bedroom

Cool and bright lighting in the bedroom is a possible reason for bad sleep quality, as it affects your circadian rhythm by mimicking daylight and making you alert. Switch your bulbs to warm tone lighting, which does the opposite and relaxes your body. Dimming your bedroom lighting also helps. Use lamps for ambient lighting around your room instead of ceiling lights.

2. Incorporate calming scents

Aromatherapy is a great way to help you relax, preparing you for sleep. Scented candles are an easy way to do this, especially those made with calming essential oils. Popular fragrances that help with sleep include lavender, ylang-ylang, neroli, chamomile, peppermint, and bergamot.

3. Paint your bedroom walls with a soothing colour

While warm lighting is conducive to sleep, your walls should be painted in cool tones, as they lower the blood pressure and your heart rate. Excellent colours include neutral shades, grey, green, lavender, and light blues. Avoid bright shades and loud prints on the walls.

4. Hide your phones

We’ve always been advised to not use our phones for at least an hour before sleeping because the harsh lighting and content we consume meddles with brain activity and affects our sleep. Similarly, you should also hide your smartphones before you sleep. How often have you been awakened by a notification when your phone lit up? Solve that by hiding your phone inside a bedside drawer or anything similar.

5. Use blackout curtains

Darkness is vital for good sleep. If your current curtains let the outside light in at night, consider switching to thick, blackout curtains that completely block light. However, it may work a little too well and block out sunlight, so don’t forget to set your alarm!
