2019/2020 Music & Movie Trends

The 2000’s are back!

That’s right, this year’s music scene was a blast to the past! Ariana Grande kicked the year off with her hit single ‘thank you, next’, paying homage to the 2000’s cult classic, Mean Girls, Missy Elliot dropped a new album after almost a decade of silence and most of all, pop punk is popular again?!

We’ve seen a resurgence of sounds from the 2000’s throughout 2019 and we don’t see this train stopping anytime soon. Missy Elliot’s comeback has been widely anticipated in the hip-hop scene being the successful artist that she was in her prime. Recognizing her accomplishments in music and film throughout her career, she picked up the highly regarded ‘Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award’ at the MTV Video Music Awards back in August 2019.

Her album introduced to the public her iconic ‘Missdemeanor’ style, helping to pave way for a new generation of female rappers. We can’t wait to see what next year has in store for the hip-hop scene, as we’ve been experiencing less mumble rap and more of what hip-hop was meant to be.

In other news that’ll get 90’s kids squeal with excitement- emo-pop has made a revival. In a music world where criss-cross of genres have become the norm (country-EDM, jazz-rap, etc) the emo genre too finds itself getting mixed across the music scene in some pretty incredible ways. In 2018, emo rap was the fastest-growing genre on Spotify. The cross-blended genre has only gotten bigger since, bringing forth a new wave of talented artists and emotional lyrics that are sure to tug at your heartstrings.

We began October with the likes of Green Day, Evanescence, Jimmy Eat World & My Chemical Romance announcing their comeback tours, giving emo kids across the globe a reason to celebrate their long lost teenage angst!

Classic pop punk band Panic! At The Disco, famous for their song about closing doors, however, is seemingly steering away from the emo-punk genre and diving into the pop charts. The band made headlines last year when they dropped their album ‘Pray for the Wicked’, consisting of a wide genre of music. Since then, they’ve been focused on producing soundtracks for a variety of movies including The Greatest Showman, Suicide Squad & more recently, Frozen 2. Lead vocalist, Brandon Urie, also collaborated with Taylor Swift on her new song, ‘ME!’. Despite their changing style, we will forever be grateful to the founding fathers for their wacky sounding tunes and unnecessarily long song titles.

Reboots, Rejoice!

With everything that’s happened with music throughout 2019, it seems like it’s going to be an excitingly nostalgic year for all 90’s kids. You’ll be pleased to hear that this comeback isn’t limited to just music, but also for movies. One thing that seems to resonate well is the reboot of old Disney classics into live action films. We’ve already had the pleasure of watching the magical Dumbo, ever-entertaining Aladdin and grandiose Lion King in 2019 and we still have Mulan, Cruella, and most likely The Little Mermaid lined up in the coming year.

Disney fans all around have also been freaking out about baby Yoda’s appearance in The Mandalorian (How can you not? Literally the cutest, he is).

Apart from our favorite Disney films, what else do we have to look forward to in the coming 2020? Here are some of the most anticipated movies that’ll get your nostalgia gears going:

Top Gun (I know right?), Bad Boys, Ghostbusters, Bill & Ted (you know, that pretty outrageous Keanu Reeves movie), Fast & Furious (duh), Godzilla, Coming 2 America (those who are familiar with the 1988 Eddie Murphy movie) & Scooby Doo- this is just the tip of the iceberg of awesome movies that will be showcased on next year’s big screens.

With a brief recap on the 2019 music/movie scene and mild euphoria on what’s to come for 2020, all we can say is-

What a time to be alive.
